Your home hasn’t changed much for a while, has it? Maybe it’s been a few months, or maybe a few years, since you added in a dash of new color, rearranged the furniture, or completely revamped your signature style. Well, it’s time for a fresh start. It’s a new year, and that means new home decor. Here are some simple ways to refresh your home:
Remove Clutter
Decorating tip number one is essential. Before you can bring in anything new, you need to get rid of the old. A year’s worth of accumulated clutter needs to be sorted and either kept or donated to make way for things you actually need or want. Is that throw blanket looking more threadbare than cozy? Toss it. Do you have a bookshelf full of knick-knacks that you don’t even like anymore? Donate them. Go through every room in your home and decide what you want to have with you in the new year, and what you don’t.
A Fresh Coat of Paint
The easiest thing you can do to make your space feel entirely new is to try a new paint color. Dull rooms come to life when you redefine them with a new look, whether you choose a bold hue or a subdued shade. Earth tones are popular this year, with natural browns and greens taking center stage. Colors like these are soothing and relaxing, which makes them ideal for bedrooms and family rooms.
Bring in the Natural Light
After being cooped up for so long, all of us are longing to get out. Open up your home to the great outdoors by rethinking how you let in light. If you have heavy drapes blocking out your windows, switch them out for something a little more sheer, or replace your curtains entirely and go for Roman blinds. The goal is to let in as much natural light as possible while maintaining privacy.
Texturize
In keeping with the “bringing the outdoors in” theme, natural textures are another way to warm up your space and make it feel fresh. Jute is a popular natural material to decorate with and is fitting for every room in the house. Ceramic, wood, and rattan are also excellent options. Rattan and wood are ideal materials for furniture, while ceramic and jute are best for accent pieces. You can also bring in plants for a touch of realism.
Make it Green
If you want to create a relaxing, modern home for the new year, you want elements of green. Green paint, green furniture, green paintings—it all works. There are so many shades to choose from, but forest green is a particularly soothing one and is easy to coordinate with. Even if you’re not up for a major remodel, simple items like green throw pillows and nature-inspired paintings can do a lot to help set the mood.
We always look at the new year as a fresh start, and that should apply to all aspects of life! So while you’re setting your resolutions, deciding on your new look, and refreshing your wardrobe, don’t forget to give your home a good sprucing up too.
